The Mario Quilt

The goal of my friend, Vanessa, was to finish the Mario quilt for her grandson’s Christmas gift. The little guy has known about the project for several months and has approved the fabrics and the assembly progress for awhile. Each time he visited this fall, he asked, “Is the Mario quilt finished yet?” In just a few days Vanessa can hug him and say, “Yes, it is finished.”

Vanessa collected licensed prints depicting characters of the popular video game and movie and combined them with solid colored fabrics. She followed my “Presto, Change-O!” pattern which magically transforms straight-set squares into squares on-point. She chose the edge to edge “Becker’s Shooting Star” quilting design because stars feature in the video game. I quilted with medium blue thead which coordinates with the backing fabric and blends well with all the colors on the front of the quilt.

Bound with royal blue fabric, this throw-size quilt is ready for snuggling under!

If you live locally and want to learn how this fun-to-make quilt goes together, sign up to take the “Presto, Change-O!” class at Sew There! Quilts and More in Angier, NC. Click here to see the list of classes. The dates are on Friday mornings, Jan. 19 and 26, 2024.
