Quilting on Leap Day

Leap Day . . . is that the official name for February 29th? I was happy for the bonus of having one more day in February to work on UFOs. I finished up a baby quilt; here’s the story.

Last April when Annika and her family visited us, she expressed an interest in making a quilt. She selected nine of her favorite squares from a “Sincerely Yours” charm pack (Sheri and Chelsi, designers for Moda). She learned the basics from piecing, to adding borders, to quilting, and binding.

Because Annika used only nine of the forty-two squares, that left a sizeable amount of the heart-themed prints that I could use to make a crib quilt for a baby girl. I added some prints from my stash and arranged them in a 7 by 7 grid, alternating darks and lights. The quilt top has hung on the rack in my quilting studio for many months, awaiting an opportune time for quilting.

Leap Day found me caught up with all quilting deadlines, so I loaded the “Sincerely Yours” quilt in the longarm. Using light pink thread, I freehand quilted hearts and loops over all. I love how it turned out and that it’s finally finished.

In addition to quilting the baby quilt, I prepped and packed a suitcase full of the projects I hope to sew on a quilting retreat next week. I’m taking a few UFOs and a couple of new projects as well. Wish me speedy sewing!

Did you sew something special on Leap Day, the bonus day of 2024?
