Quilts for Cousins

My friend and longarm quilting customer, Elizabeth M., made these quilts for her grand-nephews. “Easiest strippy quilt design ever,” right??!! Usually Elizabeth makes “I Spy” quilts using 6″ squares of similar novelty fabric for the new additions to her extended family. When I asked her why she opted instead for this patchwork design, she said these quilts are for second-born children in two families, and she has already given “I Spy” quilts to the first-born children. Makes sense!

Did you notice that the quilt on the left was displayed upside down? I wanted you to see all the fabrics used in these two identical quilts: from dinosaurs to cars, from footballs to baseballs and soccer balls, from doughnuts to doggies, from the Cat in the Hat to Mickey Mouse. Such fun fabrics!

Elizabeth found a wonderful flannel print of woodland animals on medium blue for the backing. I used a medium gray thread which disappeared in the many colors on the quilt front and blended nicely on the quilt backing. The pantograph, “Happy Times,” added swirly movement to the linear patchwork. A binding of colorful dots on black background is planned.

The baby cousins are sure to enjoy using their quilts well into childhood!
