On August 23, 2024 I blogged about a baby quilt I had started using Thomas the Tank Engine fabrics. Click here to link to the post. At the end of the day, when the blocks were on my design wall, I was not 100% pleased with the fabrics I had chosen from the fat quarter stack. I felt the blues and greens and red polka dot were all of the same intensity. I wished I had used some of the lighter blue and yellow prints in the collection to add interest and sparkle.
I sewed the blocks into rows and took the labeld rows in a project bag to a quilting retreat. After joining the rows and adding a white inner border, I cut fat quarters of various colors into 5″ strips for a scrappy outer border. I am so much happier with the quilt now that some yellow and medium blue prints have been added!
I selected a light blue thread for quilting Es and 3s freehand all over the quilt. The black and white stripe binding is reminiscent of a train engineer’s cap and overalls.
I can’t wait to give this Thomas the Tank Engine quilt to the parents-to-be!
Have you ever counted on a border to augment your quilt’s appearance?
