Scrappy Nine Patch Finished

Inspired by a picture on Pinterest, this quilt has been on my bucket list for several years. Hooray, it is finally finished!

Scrappy Nine Patches

In 2022 I began making Nine Patches with scrap 2” squares and bundled them in groups of ten. At a 2023 retreat I made the half square triangles and triangle-in-a -square units. And it all sat tidily in a box on a shelf in my studio until I decided to haul it to Texas for a holiday visit with my daughter and her family.

I thought perhaps I would have time to set the units together while Trinity and her husband were at work. And I thought I could arrange the units on her design wall in preparation of sewing them together in horizontal rows. Alas, her design wall space was already taken; she is working on an elaborate, on point Star quilt.

Shifting gears, I decided to sew the units for the quilt center together in a 5 x 5 grid. I then sewed strips of the HST and Nine Patch units together and added them around the center portion, Courthouse Steps style. Happily, most of the quilt top was complete by the end of our Christmas vacation.

Upon returning home, I made the additional HST and Nine Patch units needed to bring the quilt to queen size. I added an inner border of black and an outer border of a red leaf print given to me by a quilting friend. (Thanks, Patti!)

I used gold thread to quilt the “Happy Times” pantograph over all. Bound in the red leaf print, the quilt has taken up residence on our bed, keeping us toasty warm during the frosty winter nights.

This UFO, carried over from last year’s “plan to complete this” list is finished, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome!
