Scrap Challenge Progress

Soon after my January 3rd blog post which suggested the “Scrappity-Do-Dah” design for the 2025 Scrap Challenge, Stephanie sent a picture of a quilt top she made last year. She writes, “I have been making these blocks as leaders and enders.  The scraps were already cut into strips and half square triangles when I purchased a ‘box’ at the annual Logan Quilt Guild sale/auction.  The donor of the sale item is responsible for pricing their donation.  This bargain box was $3.00.  The box has been reduced to a large ziploc bag; I’m sure at least enough scraps remain for one additional quilt top.” Stephanie plans to donate her quilt to a charity her guild supports.

So cheerful and colorful! Anything and everything goes. My eyes keep moving around the quilt, engaging my brain to enjoy the design. I notice an optical illusion; the lattice strips seem to come to the forefront while the background triangles seem to recede.

Update: Throughout January Stephanie augmented the last of the triangles and strips with ten squares from her stash and made the second lap quilt. “Who would think you could get two quilt tops for $3.00?”

I’ve added quite a few 5″ blocks to my collection in January. I plan to alternate lighter fabrics with darker fabrics in my “Scrappity-Do-Dah” quilt. Knowing my stash is mostly darker fabrics, I asked my daughter for some of her lighter scraps and cut them into 5″ squares while visiting her. Going forward, I’ll aim to make an equal number of light blocks and dark blocks.

Are you keeping up with the challenge? I suggest making 4 blocks a week to total about 200 by year’s end. If you are making 4 1/2″ finished blocks as I am, 200 will be enough for a throw-size quilt. Click here for the initial challenge and basic instructions.

If you are participating in the Scrap Challenge, comment below to say how many blocks you’e made to date. I’ll draw a name on February 3, 2025 and send the winner sixteen 5″ squares, enough for February’s quota.
